On our way out of California, we stopped in Redcrest for two nights. In the heart of California Redwoods country, and right on the Avenue of the Giants (a scenic highway that runs through Humboldt Redwoods State Park), our campground was a quiet, tucked-away haven, surrounded by beautiful forest.
We spent one day driving the Avenue of the Giants, making stops along the way to check out the massive trees. One of the highlights was the Immortal Tree, which was right at our own campground, Ancient Redwoods RV Park. This tree is somewhere between 950 and 1000 years old, and it has survived lightning and fire. We also saw the Eternal Tree House, a 20-foot room inside of the trunk of a tree, just right up the road from where we camped.
We enjoyed some interactive exhibits at the Visitor Center and exploring several groves up and down the scenic road. It was raining, so we didn’t do any hiking, but the girls had a great time puddle jumping at our many stops.
I think our favorite stop was the Shrine Drive-Thru Tree. We were in Bonnie, the Dodge Ram, so we were a little too wide to actually drive through the tree (and I wouldn’t have chanced that with a new truck that we just recently got back after a break-in), but we were able to see some smaller cars go through; and we walked through the large trunk. This stop also included some tree houses that the kids really enjoyed.
It was a wondrous thing to see. The size of those trees is breathtaking, and to think of how old they are is just mind-blowing.
