Homeschool Year: 20 Weeks Down

We’ve been homeschoolers for 20 weeks now, following a Christian curriculum (My Father’s World) that includes Language Arts, Math, Science, Bible History, Music, and Art. We have had some ups and downs, which mostly have revolved around the girls thinking they can get away with more, because we’re their parents. They try to goof around more, and since it’s just the two of them, they feed off of each other. But, we have definitely made strides. We usually cover everything for the day in just a couple of hours, as we can move as quickly as our two students want to go. Without the breaks and waiting for all children to be on the same page that happens in a regular classroom, we can move from one thing to the next at the pace that fits our kids’ style.

We have also been able to use a lot of our travels as part of school. We’ve been to a lot of historical sites, we are covering geography as we move through the states, and we get a little extra natural science in at all the state parks and National parks we are able to visit. The girls are strong readers, and are doing really well in math and science.

When we decided to travel, the homeschooling idea was the part that worried me the most. While its had its challenges, it has been rewarding so far. Ray and I have been able to share the teaching responsibilities and come up with a system that is working for us. We have 14 weeks to go to finish this first year’s curriculum.

  1. Taking this time to really bond as a family, travel and tie in learning is truly a blessing for your sweet girls. I’m sure this will be one of the things they always remember and share these adventures with their own children. Hope you’ve got them creating a scrapbook of this exciting year!
