We got some wind and rain for a couple of days, courtesy of Hurricane Hermine. Luckily, we were not in the direct path, as that would have been a bad deal in an RV (actually, we would have abandoned ship for my sister’s place), but my heart really goes out to those who were affected by the storm. After the weather passed, we had a pretty nice day Saturday. So, we decided to check out a surfing competition in Cocoa Beach.

Home to Ron Jon’s and full of surfers, Cocoa Beach is somewhat touristy, but definitely quirky and fun. We lucked out with a great parking spot in a small 10-car lot right near the beach, and claimed a spot a bit away from the crowd. The girls love just jumping the waves and aren’t so interested in watching any surfing, but I was pretty amazed by the kid portion of the competition – boys and girls around age 10 or so out there catching waves and doing a pretty impressive job. There was also a tandem surfing event (mostly adults for that one), which was interesting, though a bit odd. Most of the duos included a guy and girl team; the guy would raise the girl up in a sort of Dirty Dancing lift and ride in like that. But, then there was the one guy who was surfing with a baby. A no-joke, probably under a-year-old baby. He’d ride in holding the baby up in the air. They went down once, and baby went under. The crowd gasped in unison, then the man’s arms shot up with baby in them, and everyone clapped. Again, odd. Man, I wish I’d gotten a picture of that.

We enjoyed a seafood lunch on the pier, where we listened to a musician do some calypso and beachy tunes. Jayden likes any opportunity to dance, and sees the world as her dancefloor. We can be shopping at Ross-Dress-For-Less, and a crowded aisle turns into her dancefloor. She does not need to hear any music. She dances to the tune in her own head. So, an actual beat and some real space for true dancing is a very good time in her view.

After the beach, we went to a car show of sorts – all Volkswagen Bugs. I was impressed with the vans. They actually have little kitchens and beds. I did not realize this. Really cool. Maybe once we finish our RV travels and settle into the farmhouse, we can travel in a hippy-chic VW van on the weekends – Camping Ready!
